South Road Now Underway

King Island Council has commenced work on widening South Road to improve road safety.

The short section of road from the TasWater tanks to the intersection of Old Grassy and South Roads is currently narrow with sinking edges.

The entire length of this section will be widened and sealed over 8 weeks at a total cost of $260,000 over the 2020/21 and 2021/22 financial years.

The widening will add a metre to each side of the road and involve removal of the existing soil, replacing it with aggregate prior to sealing and ensuring water will drain away from the road surface.

The work will be weather dependent and require a manual stop-go traffic control system. Drivers may need to allow more travelling time while this work is underway and to reduce speed for their safety and the safety of Council’s works crew.

This widening and sealing is funded under the Commonwealth Government’s Roads to Recovery program.
