King Island Community Gym
Summary
Development of the King Island Recreation Strategy in FY2019-20 identified unmet demand for a publicly accessible indoor exercise facility and improvement to existing outdoor tennis and netball courts at the Currie Oval precinct. Funding was promised during the 2019 election campaign through the Community Development Grants Program, and a grant deed signed in February 2022 providing funding of $1M for the development of a community gym and wellbeing facility and improvements to the existing outdoor courts.
Consultation with the Councillor Parks & Recreation Working Group and community in August and September 2022 informed a concept design developed by our architect. Council has subsequently committed to allocate funding from the Local Roads & Community Infrastructure Fund to increase the project budget and assure an outcome that will provide long term benefit to our community. The concept design has been refined and documentation developed to inform tenders to construct the new facility and resurface the courts. The facility is expected to be operational in late 2024.
