Negotiations between King Island Council and Regional Express to progress

The King Island Council welcomes Rex’s willingness to return to negotiations on a long term access partnership, following its suspension last month of Tuesday and Wednesday services from Tullamarine to King Island.

Council has been working closely with the Tasmanian Government appointed facilitator, Mr John Fitzgerald to identify a mutually agreeable way forward . It has been confirmed through the course of these discussions, that there is a willingness by both parties to work together again in the best interests of the Island’s community and visitor economy.

King Island Council Mayor, Duncan McFie, today committed to working constructively, cooperatively and respectfully with Rex, acknowledging Rex is an ASX listed Australian headquartered airline.  “I wish to apologise unreservedly for any offence and inaccuracies caused by statements in the media made by myself on behalf of King Island Council in relation to Regional Express Airlines, its Chair Lim Kim Hai and their business operations.”

“Protecting Island access for our residents and visitors is of paramount importance to King Island Council and that is why we are looking forward to working closely with the airline and the Tasmanian Government to announce a way forward.”
