Sports Grounds, Parks & Reserves
King Island Council endeavours to provide well maintained sporting grounds, parks and reserves for the enjoyment of the community. Council encourages the engagement of team sports, community events and other functions that foster community spirit.
Sports & Recreation Grounds
Council has a major recreation facility at the King Island Recreation Complex. These facilities are primarily used by the King Island Racing Club, for their annual harness and galloping race seasons, Pony Club and for the King Island Show.
Council also maintains the football oval in Grassy and a recreation ground at Currie, which includes the football oval, tennis and netball courts. Both of the Island’s ovals are utilised for both football training and games during the football season.
Parks and Reserves
There are a number of family friendly parks and reserves on the Island that are maintained by Council.
The main playground is located in the centre of Currie featuring swings, slippery dips and other play equipment for children (or adults) to enjoy.
There are several BBQ areas for public use on King Island. These BBQ areas are located at Grassy near the oval (managed by Council), Currie Harbour (managed by Lions Club), Naracoopa Esplanade (managed by the Naracoopa Progress Association) and Penny’s Lagoon (managed by Parks & Wildlife Tasmania).
Skate Park
The Council maintains the skate park located in the main centre of Currie. The facility is designed for multiple disciplines including skateboarders, scooterists and BMX riders. Please make sure you or your child are all padded out with all necessary safety equipment.
Jetties & Boat Ramps
Public marine facilities on King Island that are managed by the Council include the Naracoopa Jetty and Quarantine boat ramp.
Swimming Pools
Council is supportive of the Swimming Association of King Island (SAKI) who manages the Swimming Pool in the Grassy Township. Please contact SAKI on 0427 829 438 for more information.
The Department of Education also provides a smaller pool at the King Island District High School in Currie. Public access to the King Island School Swimming Pool is available via membership. Please contact the school on (03) 6462 1366 for further details.
